Seriously, this is just terrible. Why would they do this?

Picture unrelated, I was talking about the BMW X1's cupholder.

I really do like the X1, though. It’s not that tall, and has clownshoe-ish looks to my eyes. Strip the cladding and lower it and I’m in (or just get the first gen in M-sport trim)

On the one hand, I like it, because it’s a throwback to BMW not putting cupholders in their cars. On thebother hand, I hate it, because I hit my knee on it every time I get in my wife’s car. It is removeable, though.

There’s actually a brushed metal cover that springs into place when you remove the cupholder. Matches the accents of the dash. I think it looks pretty nice. Has a little design on it, so it doesn’t look tacked on.

At least it looks secure.

This mother fucker will happily send any container into the back seat if you hit the gas. It also has helpful side cut outs to enable coffee delivery to your lap when taking a sharp turn.

I’m disappointed that the new M35i trim is only available on the X2, although I do kinda like the X2 M35i as it’s basically a hot hatch. 302 hp, front LSD, shorter gearing, stiffer suspension, bigger brakes, etc. It’s not as bonkers as the 375 hp GLA45 AMG, but it starts at $46,450 instead of $53,350 on the Benz, and to get the optional LSD the price goes up to $56,150. Whereas the X2 M35i fully optioned up how I’d like it is $52,725.

What kills it for me is the X1 is a better, more useful body shape with no performance penalty if it also had an M35i trim, it’s a few grand cheaper with equivalent options , and BMW still doesn’t have goddamn Android Auto. Fuckers.

I’ve never used android auto or apple carplay, but I have used BMW’s iDrive system. I find it pretty intuitive and overall a well integrated system, even without a touchscreen.

I have iDrive in my car and the navigation is garbage compared to Google Maps. All I want is to have Google Maps show on the screen built into the dashboard.

The cup holder is from an XJ8, but that photo has it retrofitted into an XJ40.
